ABC’s Single Parents
During the Ralph Breaks the Internet event, we had a day of set visits to two ABC shows.
First up was ABC?s The Rookie (you can check that set visit post out here!) on the Warner Bros. Studio lot and the second was an ABC’s Single Parents set visit on the Fox lot.
There was some filming going on in Will’s house, but we didn’t get close enough to see much there. However, did get to tour pretty much every other set on the soundstage, and even had a few high power tour guides walking us through it!
Here?s what I learned during my ABC’s Single Parents set visit.
Best Tour Guides EVER
The first thing we did when we arrived on set for our Single Parents set visit was to settle onto Douglas’s back porch with a glass of red wine and a few light appetizers.
Ok, not really. But doesn’t that sound like what a visit to Douglas’s house should sound like?
Instead, we met up with Executive Producer and director Jason Winer- who was an even better treat than snacks and booze.
True story.
Jason is best known for directing the Modern Family pilot as well as 19 other episodes of that hit show.
He took us on a tour of the set, explained a little bit about the special circumstance around filming their show, and how they work things around the kid actor’s schedules.
He was joined by the hilarious and generous voter Jake Choi, “Miggy Park” on the series.
Jake proudly showed off his “I voted” sticker since it was election day and, yes, we all commented on it. Jason wore one too, for the record.
You gotta vote, y’all! Even when you’re a big name in Hollywood: VOTE!
Okay, PSA over.
Jason introduced Jake by telling us how great he is with all the kids on the set, but especially the babies. Apparently, Jake has a little bit of baby fever.
Jake Choi: I do. A little bit? A lot. I have a lot of baby fever. I love them [the twins playing his son Jack ] so much.
If watching a good looking guy play with kids and babies is your thing, follow @theJakeChoi on Instagram. His Insta-stories from set melt me!
There Are a Lot of Sets And a Lot of Set Magic on ABC’s Single Parents
Okay… on to what we learned during the ABC’s Single Parents set visit.
There were a ton of rooms and sets to see, so this is going to be photo-heavy!
Behind the Scenes Single Parents Angie’s House
First up: Angie’s living room and kitchen, with Jason Winer explaining how they set her house.
It’s messy- on purpose.
With white walls- on purpose.
Because she’s a renter and wouldn’t be spending money painting someone else’s home!
Yup- accurate!
We walked through so many rooms and spied a ton of different sets on the ABC’s Single Parents set visit that it was almost overwhelming.
Jason explained that this was one of the challenges the show has, which is amplified with the many minors they have acting on the series.
Jason Winer: “It?s a lot of sets, more than normal for a comedy. And part of that is the concept. They’re single parents, right? So, it’s all the different houses, and they’re rotating.”
One of the set magic tricks we learned is that Angie and Will share a bedroom- no, not like that.
The same space is reused, however, and the set dressing changed to reflect each actors space.
Behind the Scenes ABC’s Single Parents Miggy’s House
Jason also explained that the kid series regulars hours are restricted by law due to their age, so it was important to keep all the sets tight together.
Jason Winer: But it’s also important for us on the production side because the challenge of doing a show with five kid series regulars is that their hours are restricted. So, we had to build every environment in here so that we can do the whole show moving from environment to environment and somehow manage to shoot episodes in one week. So, it’s a challenge, but it’s one we have fun with. But all the sets were designed with that in mind.
We all gave a collective, “Ahhhhhh!” as the lightbulbs went off over our heads. This makes perfect sense.
It would be so much harder to have continuity for shooting if you had houses spread across multiple set locations.
Behind the Scenes ABC’s Single Parents Pictures of Rory’s Room
Rory’s room is fabulous- just like Rory!
So many bright, fun touches here.
We saw Devin Trey Campbell, who plays Rory Banks, briefly on the lot- he smiled and waved when we noticed him (what a pro- and such a cute kiddo!).
We spent a ton of time on the set, and it was so cool to check everything out.
I was laughing the whole time to myself because while Jason was explaining things, Jake was chiming in with his own surprise.
He was kinda on the tour with us- and learned a little about the sets himself that afternoon!
Behind the Scenes ABC’s Single Parents | The Winebrary
Fun fact: Jake was a bartender for 5 years (but used a totally different kind of wine opener than the one they had him learn on set.)
Behind the Scenes ABC’s Single Parents Douglas’s House
The funniest thing that struck me about the sets happened in Douglas’s house.
First, it’s gorgeous, and if you’ve seen the show, it’s very manly. Like Brad Garrett, who plays Douglas Fogerty.
It’s also very tall, like Brad.
Most television sets don’t have ceilings due to lighting. It’s preferable to light from above, so the tops are left open.
But with Brad being so tall and the kids he’s filmed with being so small, there was going to be a lot of ceiling shown in the series. So his house actually has one!

and I’ve got some sneak peek images below from tonight’s episode, “The Beast.”
What is ABC’s Single Parents About?
It’s an ensemble comedy that follows a group of- what else?- single parents as they raise their 7-year-olds.
The challenges that face all of them range from parenting to maintaining their own personal lives outside of the kids.
I said parenting was hard, right? This series helps illustrate how doing it alone comes with additional challenges for both adults and kids.
The work that goes into keeping some part of “self” is universal to all parents, I think, single or not!
ABC’s Single Parents: Miggy Helps Graham with his Swag
“I am not a ki-… yeah, sure…”
Oh Miggy, you are adorable. And just what Graham needed here.
See what I?m saying? There?s a lot of heart and laughter in this show- and the kids are excellent. I can’t even tell you which one I love the most because each has their own special hilarious moments.
Total mom answer right there, amirite?
The Beast- ABC’s Single Parents
Tonight the episode is called ?The Beast? and it looks like another funny one.
Will encourages Angie to rediscover her passion for heavy metal music by taking a guitar class, and in turn, Angie insists that Will get back in the field covering weather by driving both of them into a storm. Meanwhile, the rest of the gang explore their romantic passions as Douglas pursues his crush on Big Red with the help of Miggy, and Poppy feels an instant connection with a dreamy musician, on an all-new episode of ?Single Parents.”
Here are the sneak peeks I promised you of the action we?re going to see tonight!
I can?t wait to watch this episode tonight now that I’ve peeked behind the scenes on the set visit.
ABC’s Single Parents set visit was such a cool experience- hope the behind the scenes ABC’s Single Parents peek gets you excited to watch more of the show!
