You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be used against you in a court of law. Yup. I might have watched a few cop shows in my day! The newest law enforcement drama to grab my attention is ABC’s The Rookie. Last month I had a chance to visit the set of The Rookie when I partnered with Disney and ABC TV. Here’s what I learned during my first television set visit- and some sneak peeks at the episode airing tonight at 10pm ET/9pm CT!

I Waive My Right To Remain Silent About ABC’s The Rookie
During the Ralph Breaks the Internet event, we had a day of set visits to two ABC shows.
First up was ABC’s The Rookie on the Warner Bros. Studio lot and the second was ABC’s Single Parents on the Fox lot (post coming on this experience- it was totally different!).
I’d been on the official Warner Bros. Studio tour before, but I’d never been on a hot set! With crew and actors and real live “rolling!” being announced by the director.
Here’s what I learned on The Rookie set visit as a set visit rookie myself.
Cool Things Happen in a Warehouse, Basically
When we pulled onto the lot, we had to snake our way through what felt like hundreds of boring beige buildings that looked exactly the same. Except for a number on the side, and sometimes a poster announcing what was filming, they all look the same.
This, my friends, is where the movie-making magic happens.
Inside a warehouse, basically.
The outside of a stage might look the same on a studio lot, but the inside is amazingly detailed when you get on set.
The backs of the sets are unfinished and show all kinds of ropes, hooks, lights, poles, and plywood.
But the actual sets where filming happens? Pretty real, y’all.
Hurry Up and Wait is Life
Heard the old saying hurry up to wait? That’s set life in a nutshell!
When we showed up, the actors were rehearsing and finishing a scene.
There was a flurry of activity in nearby rooms and we were ushered into some viewing spots.
So we got a few seconds to grab headsets and watch the filming.
And I do mean a few seconds- because it was over fast when we arrived. I’m not even sure who we saw filming in those first moments, it was that quick.
And when it was over, a couple of actors jumped past us, waving and saying, “The Bloggers- yay!” on their way off the set.
Pretty sure it was Melissa O’Neil who plays “Lucy Chen” and Titus Makin who plays “Jackson West,” but I’m hoping I can tell you for sure after watching tonights episode.
While the cameras were adjusted and different actors called for scenes, we got a chance to walk around the set of ABC’s The Rookie and check things out.
Now, they didn’t just send us to explore alone. We had company.
Mercedes Mason, who plays ?Zoe Andersen” gave us an insiders tour!
She walked us through processing, took our mug shots, and rifled the drawers in Sgt. Grey’s office.
All on her day off, guys. I love her.
Luckily, they got back to filming while we were still there and we watched a scene rehearse in front of us on the monitors.
And it was funny because we heard everything the actors said, even between takes: and they were talking about US.
Don’t worry, as Olaf says- all good things!
While I didn’t personally get to meet Nathan Fillion, who stars as The Rookie “John Nolan,” and Afton Williamson, his kick-ass Training Officer “Talia Bishop,” my fellow blogging friends did.
And they apparently made an impression when it came to their selfie games.
Selfies: you gotta love them! Bringing stars and the star-struck together one forward facing camera at a time.
Richard T. Jones, “Wade Grey” was also on the set getting in on the selfie action.
The Rookie set visit was over way too fast and I was just trying to take it all in. I’d totally come back for filming of Season 2, if they need an extra in the holding cell or something.
ABC: call me!
Need More of ABC’s The Rookie? Tune in Tonight!
So sure, the behind the scenes stuff is awesome, but are you watching the show?
Please tell me you are. The Rookie is so much fun and has laughs, action, and a lot of heart.
And Nathan Fillion. (Wut- just sayin’!)
Tune in on Tuesdays at 10|9c on The ABC Television Network or streaming or on demand.
We’re going to live-tweet along with the show, so be sure to join us! #TheRookie #ABCTVEvent
What’s The Rookie About?
John Nolan, a small town kind of guy, makes a big move to Los Angeles after his marriage of over 20 years ends.
His dream: become an officer in the LAPD. The problem? He’s old.
Well, old for a Rookie, anyway.
While this might appear to be a basic cop show, I gotta tell you: it’s so much more than that. And I think that’s why I’m loving this one so much.
It’s more like a relationship show focusing on a midlife reboot- that just happens to happen during a cop show.
The Rookies Stick Together- The Rookie on ABC
See what I’m saying? There’s a lot of heart in this show and we’re loving it over here!
Tonight the episode is called “The Hawke” and it looks GOOD.
Nolan and the team try to help capture a cop (and his former mentor from the academy!) when he becomes a fugitive himself.
Here are the sneak peeks I promised you of the action we’re going to see tonight!
I can’t wait to watch this episode tonight!
If love ABC’s The Rookie is wrong, then just go ahead and slap the cuffs on. I won’t resist – especially if you send Officer Nolan to pick me up.
The Rookie set visit was such a cool experience- hope this behind the scenes peek gets you excited to watch more of the show!
