My Marvel Cinematic Universe love is worn on my sleeve.

And my phone case.

And my suitcase.

Er, I tend to be a walking advertisement for the franchise.

It’s ok: I own it. I know my fandom gets a little nutty when it comes to the MCU.

And this year is going to be huge for the Marvel fan.

2018 might be the year that I finally just explode from anticipation. Black Panther in February, Avengers: Infinity War in May and Ant-Man and the Wasp in July.

Now, we already know about the Avengers. And Ant-Man had his debut a few summers ago as well.

But the Black Panther is the new guy for a non-comic book fan.

You probably have questions: here’s where to find the answers.

Black Panther Marvel Movie: Who is the Black Panther - what you need to know about the first black super hero before February 16!

Who is the Black Panther?

The Black Panther is an African King who’s real name is T’Challa.

He inherited the crown and title of Black Panther when (spoiler alert!) his father was killed during Captain America: Civil War.

He is the ruler and protector of a highly technologically advanced nation in Africa.

What do you know about Wakanda?

We know that biggest asset in Wakanda is a natural substance called Vibranium (aka the stuff Captain America’s shield is made from!).

This featurette gives you a little background toward answering the question who is the Black Panther:

The Infinity War trailer shows us that both Black Panth and Wakanda are going to play a big role in that film.

And this film is going to be the game changer of the MCU.

So do NOT miss Black Panther Marvel film in the theaters on February 16!

Official Synopsis from Marvel:

Marvel Studios’ BLACK PANTHER follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.

What movies to watch before Black Panther Marvel Movie?

That’s always my first question when a new movie in a franchise comes out. What movies to watch before Black Panther?

Bottom line here: there’s only one movie you *need* to see before Black Panther and that’s Captain America: Civil War.

It also happens to be one of my favorites in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so trust me when I say: you are going to love it!

This is where we meet the mysterious Black Panther and learn just a smidge about Wakanda.

We get our first glimpse of the African nation at the end of the movie which will absolutely get you hyped to learn more about it.

Check out this featurette from Civil War and you’ll see why it’s the movie to watch before Black Panther comes out!

This is a character who fans have been begging to see on the screen according to Marvel president Kevin Feige. And his time is now.

But I’m going to encourage you to dive into the Marvel movies with me. To be honest, it makes sense to go ahead and watch a few extra Marvel movies before Black Panther comes out, even if he isn’t staring in them.

There’s a lot of them, that’s true! But the best answer for what movies to see before Black Panther is in this post: it also covers what movies to see before Avengers Infinity War in order.

What comic books to read before Black Panther Marvel Movie?

While the Black Panther hasn’t had his exclusive moment on screen (just yet!) he has a long and storied career in the comics.

I’ve read one comic book in my life: and it was this one.

Black Panther: Who is the Black Panther? is a great introduction to all things Wakanda and T’Challa. If you want to start somewhere before the movie, I’d start here.
