Christopher Robin Parent Movie Review

Christopher Robin, the family movie of the summer, is the perfect way to say goodbye to summer as you head back to school. This family-friendly movie is great for kids, but even better for adults! My short and sweet Christopher Robin parent movie review: go see it this weekend with your whole family.

Christopher Robin Parent Movie Review

As a longtime friend of Winnie the Pooh, I knew this was a movie that I’d need to see! This week I was treated to a sneak peek media preview of the movie with my family.

From the trailers and the posters leading up to the movie’s release, I had a feeling this was going to be more an adult movie than we all thought.

And- yep- I was right.

So is this a family friendly movie and safe for kids? Absolutely.

But parents: be warned. You’ll need some tissues for yourself because this one comes with some important life lessons that only our silly ol’ bear friend can teach us!

Christopher Robin Gets Lost

In the very relatable story line, we find Christopher Robin as a post-war adult, working a dreary job in London.

Gone are the carefree days of his youth; the now beat-down Christopher can’t even seem to make a family holiday fit in with the pressures of his work. And his family is certainly suffering for it.

Sounds way too familiar to too many of us, I fear.

When Christopher Robin needed him most, Winnie the Pooh appears and that’s when the movie comes to life.

Very important note: when the closing credits start, stick around! There’s a super sweet mid-credit scene that the Disney lovers will kick themselves for missing. So don’t!

Winnie the Pooh and the 100 Acre Wood Family

The best parts of this movie are when Christopher Robin reunites with his friends and visits the 100 Acre Wood.

Pooh discovers his friends are missing and in many nostalgic turns of events, we watch Christopher come back to his old self while helping Pooh find the others. And it’s adorable.

I honestly wasn’t too sure what I’d think about the use of “stuffies” instead of standalone digital animation (since we are so used to this by now!) but it worked.

The stuffed animals are absolutely precious and I kinda fell in love all over again with Eeyore, the scene stealing one-liner down in the mouth donkey.

Pooh Bear’s Lessons

That wise ol’ bear isn’t so silly, it turns out.

My heart melted when he says, “It’s always a sunny day when Christopher Robin comes to play” because this signaled a turning point in the movie (I don’t want to spoil it but listen for it).

He reminds Christopher Robin that sometimes, “Doing nothing often leads to the very best kind of something.” And this one stuck with me- because as a busy work from home mom, I often forget the joy of doing nothing with my family.

It’s very easy for me to work at all hours due to the nature of my job (and the fact that I legitimately love all of it!) but we all need that downtime. That doing nothing time.

Thanks for the reminder, Pooh Bear!

But the strongest line and lesson is from Haley Atwell, Christopher Robin’s wife Evelyn. She point blank lets Christopher know that, “Your life is happening now, right in front of you,” and he is missing it.

It’s a powerful moment in an overall sweet movie.

The Actors in Christopher Robin

I loved every single one of them in this movie. The voice actors were brilliant, with Brad Garrett standing out to me as being perfectly cast!

Ewan McGregor was the absolute perfect Christopher Robin to me. He was just the right level of adult who had suppressed the inner child- and it was such a joy when that part of his personality came back out to play!

Is Christopher Robin Family-Friendly?

Like I said in the beginning of this Christopher Robin parent movie review: go see it this weekend with your whole family. This movie is rated PG for some adult conversations and decidedly depressing situations. The first half is pretty bleak, y’all.

Things do start off rather slowly, but pick up in both pace and entertainment value when Pooh and Christopher leave London for the cottage at 100 Acre Wood.

I took my whole family (kids 7, 11, 13, 15) and they all enjoyed it immensely. There wasn’t anything in the movie I had concerns about my younger children watching and we will be seeing this one again!
