Favorite Hometown Race | Tuesdays on the Run

Races are, arguably, the best part of running.  The people, the experience, the bling…  I spend most of my time preparing for races all over the place.  But I want to hear about races at HOME.  Because, goodness, I don’t run enough of those!  Tell me your favorite hometown race today on Tuesdays on the Run!

Favorite Hometown Race

I’ll be the first to admit – I don’t run at home.  I mean, I save up all my time and energy for those runDisney races… I often ignore the fact that I live in DFW!  There are SO many races in my backyard that I am completely missing out on!

So really – I don’t HAVE a favorite hometown race.

Womp Wooommmppp

After the Color Run when we lived in Lubbock, Texas!

Races I Have Run in DFW

My very first 5K was the Gary Burns 5K in Frisco, Texas.  It was a last minute spur of the moment decision to run/walk with my husband one Halloween ages ago.

I also ran a special Americas Run in Arlington a few years later – where I actually RAN the entire race.  Wasn’t planning on it, but ran the whole way.  I got a medal for that one, too!

I’ve also run the Hot Cholocate race and a few Mellew events.

I’ve done three half marathons at home, one 10K, and a handful of 5Ks – but they aren’t really anything to brag about.

Tap n’ Run in Dallas! Fun Fact: I was pregnant. Brandon drank all the beer.

Hometown Race Goal 2018

I know I have talked about it a lot here before – but I have a major goal for 2018 to run more races.  Since I can’t travel to them all – I know a lot will be at home!  Here are a few I have up my sleeve…

Hot Chocolate 15K

This one is a big maybe.  It’s like… soon.  I am still recovering from bursitis in my right hip, and haven’t actually signed up yet.

If I do it – it’s going to be suuuuuper last minute.

And I need to get the okay from physical therapy.  If I need to rest up more, I’ll walk the 5K.  If I’m good to go – it’s off to the races for the 15K!

I just love those jackets so much!

Rock n Roll 5K and Half Marathon

DALLAS!  WOOT!  I would love for you to join me, too!  If you register – please use the code RNRRNB2018 in order to save some money on your half marathon registration!

This is another race I *almost* ran in 2014… but then didn’t because about a week before I found out I was expecting.

Oh, how things have changed!

Fort Worth Zoo 5K

This is something I have always wanted to do – so maybe this year should be the year!

Plus, I figure running through the zoo will make me feel right at home since I am used to running through the parks!

Spring 5K in Frisco, Texas with my husband and my dad!

Plano Baloon Festival Half Marathon

I was supposed to run this race with a girlfriend of mine… but got pregnant so ended up missing out.

Now I’d run if I was pregnant, but back then I was a little overcautious!

I almost did it last year, but didn’t, so this year it’s definitely happening this year!

Dallas Marathon

This one is kind of a bucket list race for me.

It’s on the list – because it’s one I really want to do – but logistically I don’t know if this year will happen or not.

Especially since I’m planning on running the Rock N Roll San Antonio Marathon the week before – so really – probably a no go.

I guess I could run the half marathon in SA, and then run the full marathon in Dallas…

Or I could wait.

But anyone who knows me knows I am not good at waiting.

… so I’m gonna wait and see what the bling looks like!

Zombie Run with my little brother! Fun Fact: If you finished in under 35 minutes, you survived. Over 35 minutes… you became a zombie! There were different medals. I survived. Brother is now a zombie.

  • Come run ZOOMA in Austin with me in March! It’s the only Texas race I’ll be running any time soon.

    • Sarah Bergman says:

I’m for real tempted with that one… It may be a hard sell because I’ll be in Florida for Princess one weekend, and then New Orleans for Rock N Roll the next weekend, so turning it around immediately may be hard. BUT. It’s on my list for maybe 2019…..

  • Wendy says:

I have yet to run a race in Texas! You’ve got a lot of great choices.

    • Sarah Bergman says:

Texas is a great state to check off the list if you’re aiming for all 50! SO many options. I really need to do more here!

  • Karen says:

I’ve run RnR Dallas in the past and really liked it! Dallas does have some great race opportunities, have fun running them this year! 🙂 That hot chocolate 15K sounds like a lot of fun! (I’ve also run the YMCA Turkey Trot and the Texas Rangers 5K – both of which I really enjoyed! We have family in Irving so I try to find a race to run every time we visit! Hah!)

    • Sarah Bergman says:

I did the Turkey Trot in 2009………… just a little too crowded for my taste! But I do agree – there are so many fun options. I’ll need to look into the Rangers 5K. I used to work for the team way back in the day, that would be a fun one to do!!

  • Lesley says:

I did the Dallas half in 2012, and while it was a good race, I wouldn’t run it again. There were some logistics I wasn’t happy with.

  • Looks like you’ve got some fun stuff planned! I also like traveling for races – so much fun to do that! – but I’ve never done a Disney race. I’ve never come out and run in Texas – maybe I need to do that one day!

  • I think sometimes we take hometown races for granted. We like to set ourselves up for a racecation. But logistics are always nice for hometown races.

  • Wendy says:

I don’t really have a favorite hometown race either, but I participate if there’s enough peer pressure from my running friends / group 🙂

  • I came **this close** to registering for R’n’R Dallas…then the hubby booked flights to Florida for spring break on that very day the Dallas race happens. So, maybe next year…..

  • I did the Houston marathon a while ago but never anything in Dallas! Sounds like you have some good options. I hope you can enjoy some of the local races this year!

  • Marcia says:

Was is RnR Dallas not on my radar?? You’ve got plenty of hometown races if you should choose to partake…

  • These all sound like great races, especially the Plano Balloon Festival! I live in Philly and we have almost too many races to choose from in the area!

  • Hi, Sarah!
I have finally decided to write to you after reading this article! I am currently studying the PhD Physical Therapy program as well as write on my own blog (although just started hehe). I also have a bachelors degree in Kinesiology and I am a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Your writing is really inspiring! Just checked in to tell you. Finally stepped out of the shadows of just being an anonymous reader!
