First Day of School Confession | Mom Monday
Do you hear the angels singing? The chorus of heavenly voices proclaiming that today is a VERY good day?
No?
Must just be me because it’s the first day of school here. I confess: it’s going to be a beautiful day.
Lunch boxes and backpacks make me HAPPY.
I know tons of moms and dads dread this day. And teachers? I’m sure you have mixed emotions.
The busy, the routine, and the quiet house is a total bummer for some.
But for this mom? Well, I’m just going to be crazy honest: it’s my Christmas morning. It’s Super Bowl Sunday. It’s day one of Pumpkin Spice Latte sales.
Wait… it actually might be that day as well. I need to check on that.
In short: it’s the day I look forward to on my calendar all year long.
Now don’t be all judgy. I know it’s easy to do, but just hear me out.
It’s not because I don’t want to spend time with my kids; I adore them and they are really pretty easy to love. They are all past that baby super-needy stage and are pretty cool people. They are hilarious. They are smart. They are sassy and they are loved.
I have some GREAT kids and I recognize all the time how lucky I am to have these four people in my world.
Kids- I promise it’s not you.
It’s me.
And if they are honest about it, they would agree. I’m a much better mom when school is in session.
I crave routine. I do everything better when I’m busier than when I’m not.
When there’s a schedule to adhere to, I’m aces. When there’s not one: well… let’s just say I’m less than ideal on any number of levels. I’m easily distracted and thrown off my game!
As my parents told me a few weeks ago: I’m just ok as a mom, particularly during the summer months.
Um, thanks, guys??
I get it though and will be the first to admit that I’m the person they make the “World’s Okayest Mom” mugs for (affiliate). Especially?during May, June, and July.
So today is a VERY good day.
I LOVE TODAY, Y’ALL AND I’M NOT GOING TO FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT!
I may even pull a Bad Mom Monday and head to the movie theater, eat some popcorn, have a cocktail at lunch and a little nap before they come home.
Why? Because I can. And routine can start tomorrow.
Huzzah!
Do you love or hate the first day of school? When does it start for your family?

I love the first day of school! I’ve already made plans with my sister in law to go shopping that day. 🙂 I love spending time with my kids, but after a couple of weeks of summer vacation it turns crazy here. My teen likes to bug his little brother for fun, and the younger two end up fighting over everything. I really need the peace and quiet! It does make me a better mom when I’m able to have more time to myself. Three more weeks until freedom! 😉
Oh my gosh- yes! The fighting for fun drives me bonkers! It’s so quiet here— so, so, SOOOO quiet.
I love it. <3
Summer school ends on Thursday and then the first day back is the Tuesday after Labor Day. Fortunately, my Disney pass clears on the 22nd, so I can get some quality time there before heading back to first grade again!
Bless the teachers. I mean it! Hope you enjoy a little Disney before the year starts up for ya!
