First Week Observations | Mom Monday

We’ve been on the east coast for a week now and I have a few observations about the move. Mostly we’ve been getting boxes unpacked, laundry caught up, and kids settled in schools. So there hasn’t been a ton of exploring (but it’s coming!) or doing much more than finding the closest grocery and gas station.

Some of these observations of mine are the obvious (it’s colder here- duh) but some still surprised me.

1. We are borderline?hoarders.?I thought we were better than this. Ahem.

Even after MAJOR purge action going on, we are still surrounded by boxes and boxes of mostly junk.

Remember when I said my big tip was to purge? To add to that: purge, and then purge again.

And again if you need to. Because this is banana pants.

2. People in Virginia are super nice.?

Not that they weren’t in Arizona, but we didn’t have quite the reception of neighbors stopping by like we have here. And if you know me and my shut-in tendencies, this is making me twitchy.

Mr. Shenanigans, on the other hand, loves it.

Go be social, my husband!

3. Boots and scarves: not just for fashion, yo!

Get this: they keep you WARM. And looking cute is a bonus.

Piggybacking on that…

4. Flip flops are NOT Virginia footwear in January.

Sigh. Maybe they would be if I wore them with the Ininji toe socks, but really, is that a look anyone needs to see?

Oofos, I’ll catch you in April. Maybe May.

5. I miss the sun.?

In Arizona, you simply couldn’t avoid it. It was bright, it was beautiful, and it was always ON. I had to start my summer runs at 4:30 am just to beat some of those blazing rays!

Someone turned out the lights over here.

January thus far has had one brief morning of light; the rest has been completely cloud covered and dreary.

Don’t get me wrong; there is certainly beauty here. We have trees. We have hills (oh my gosh, I’m going to have to run those suckers, aren’t I?). And overall, I think my new hometown is lovely.

I just wish it was a little brighter and offered a few sunrises like these.

Well.

There’s nothing like a desert sunrise, but I’d still like to see what Virginia’s look like!

6. Snow! It IS real!

We woke up to a bit of the white stuff this morning. And the kids loved it.

For the 15 minutes they were outside playing in it, that is.

As a novelty, we are all on board. As an everyday thing for months on end… maybe not so much.

Have you ever moved to a vastly different state before? What were some of the things you noticed?

  1. We move more than the average family too, and I love getting forced ( military) to live places we would have never experienced without it. That aside, moving sucks. I am the hermit leave me in my house and military community is social – join us hello overwhelming welcoming committee… but I will say purge, purge, and then purge too because some how stuff is still too much ahah

  2. Ha- yes, I remember that from my military spouse days as well. The funny thing is, I met a bestie that way (after I tried to avoid her for a few weeks!).

    Yep. PURGE is the WORD!

  3. Oh man, you don’t even know what gray is. Try moving up HERE. Then you’ll know gray!

But yes, I moved from NY to MD . . . not too bad. Then MD to VT — let’s just say it’s a nice place to visit, but I wasn’t fond of it. Then VT to TX. Then back to NY.

People are friendlier in the south; they really are!
