About Hanukkah 2022
Jewish communities in the US celebrate the first day of Hanukkah on December 18, 2022.
This is also known as Chanukah – or the Festival of Lights.
A brief summary: for 8 days, the Jewish community observes the struggles for religious freedom. Hanukkah commemorates the Maccabean Revolt.
A small Jewish army (The Maccabees) took on the Seleucids from 167 to 160 BCE and ultimately won after a 3-year struggle. Their temple, however, had been destroyed.
The Maccabees had to rebuild, lighting flames to celebrate as they did so. There was only enough oil to burn for one day, but through a miracle, the light stayed lit for 8 days, which was enough time to replace the depleted oil.
This year, Hanukkah and Christmas will overlap as it ends on December 26th.
