Can You Take the Kids to Solo: A Star Wars Story? | Parent Movie Review

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits movie theaters on May 25. And of course, it is on your kids’ must-see list for summer movie fun. Parents want to know: is Solo: A Star Wars Story kid friendly? Here’s my Solo: A Star Wars Story parent movie review along with a Solo themed giveaway. Punch it!

Han Solo and Chewbacca in A Solo Story: Star Wars movies in order

Alden Ehrenreich is Han Solo and Joonas Suotamo is Chewbacca in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

Solo: A Star Wars Story Parent Movie Review

I was one of the lucky few who got to see Solo: A Star Wars Story at an early press screening. And I am so glad I was included on the list because I’m now going to yell at everyone I know: get to the theaters on opening weekend! Punch it!

Before I answer the question in my Solo parent review (Is Solo: A Star Wars Story kid friendly?) let’s address the elephant in the Millennium Falcon.

There’s been some talk and chatter about how this movie wasn’t going to live up to the Star Wars brand. I get it: Harrison Ford’s Han Solo boots are some tough shoes to fill.

He’s iconic in moviegoers eyes and no matter what other roles he plays, he will always be Han Solo.

But guys, Alden Ehrenreich does a really good job stepping into the role. I promise not to spoil the movie for you with plot points or eater eggs just yet (a post for that can come later!) but I do need to gush a bit over how wonderful I thought these performances were.

Here’s my unashamedly positive Solo movie review.

Solo: A Star Wars Story Reaction Video

I watched this movie with my friend, Ashley at Teachable Mommy. We were so giddy after the movie we took a moment (ok, 7 minutes but that’s not much I promise!) to talk about our reaction to Solo.

NO SPOILERS in the video— but one. Ashley gives a big one about Avengers: Infinity War so if you haven’t seen it yet, you might want to move on past this video until then! And if you are worried about Solo? Check her Solo: A Star Wars Story review to see how she felt about the movie. She’s much nerdier than I am if that’s your thing you definitely want to follow that link.

Alden Ehrenreich as Young Han Solo

Alden Ehrenreich is Han Solo in star wars movie order

Alden Ehrenreich is Han Solo in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

I told a friend a few months ago that I just wasn’t feeling him in the role. She told me that I’d get over it and I better get on the Alden train because he’s the real deal. Amiyrah knows her Star Wars so next time I’ll just ask her before I listen to the internet chatter. Ahem.

Because she was right. I’m all aboard! Alden’s turn as young Han Solo was a lot of fun. I reminded myself going in that this was an origin story so we would see Han before the years as a smuggler— and my guess was that those years had changed him a bit.

This Han was still cocky and had swagger, but he also had the optimism and hope of youth. And I loved watching him create this role.

Joonas Suotamo as Young Chewbacca

Joonas Suotamo is Chewbacca in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

As happy as I was to see Han come to life on screen, I knew the key to this story was learning about his relationship with Chewbacca. This is where the Solo: A Star Wars Story really shined and I felt came together the most for long-time Star Wars fans.

We cheered multiple times when Chewie and Han had a moment. Joonas did a fantastic job taking over the role if Chewbacca and I hope he gets to play him in more Star Wars movies in the future.

Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian

Um, I was here for Lando. I won’t lie. I’ve been here for Lando since I saw Empire back in 1980 as a young girl. Billy Dee- SWOON.

I even went so far as to Landobound (Disneybounding as Lando) for the movie. I didn’t own a cape, but I think you can get the idea. And also: on my list is buying a cape (sorry Edna Mode!). The #LandoEffect is real, y’all!

Lando Star Wars Disneybounding

And Donald Glover was perfect. Stop review. There’s nothing more to be said here.

I could watch his performance as a young Lando over and over again (and spoiler alert: I plan to do just that!).

Donald Glover as lando in the falcon in Solo: A Star Wars Story

I could probably go on and on about everyone in the cast because each performance was great! Paul Bettany played a brilliant villain, Woody Harrelson is an excellent scoundrel, and Emilia Clarke is simply lovely in this role.

Director Ron Howard pulled off a super fun space adventure that will delight the whole family.

Solo Parent Movie Review

Obviously, I loved the movie. I can sum up my Solo review by saying this one is SO much fun, y’all! That was my first reaction when we left the theater- how fun was that?!

I’m not a super Star Wars geek so I can’t begin to guess what the fandom will think about this, but if you are a casual moviegoer or typical child of the 70s/80s like me who feels Star Wars is part of your childhood: go see this one. It is pure entertainment.

I felt like in some ways it was a love letter to the fans like me. It gave me some backstory and some nostalgia (and a healthy dose of easter eggs as well!).

But it went even further for me: it’s something I feel I can take my whole family to without concern. This movie is a much happier ending than Rogue One and leaves you feeling, well, A New Hope. (see what I did there?). I’d say Solo is kid friendly and you shouldn’t have too much of a problem choosing to take them all to this one.

What Ages Can See Solo: A Star Wars Story

My kids are 15, 13, 11 and 6. Here are my recommendations for each age based on my children’s maturity levels. Is Solo: A Star Wars Story kid friendly? I say yes.

Is Solo A Good Movie for Teen/Tweens

My Solo review as a mom says you should be good to go here. Take them!

Unless they are highly sensitive, children in this age range will be able to follow the story and enjoy it.

They shouldn’t come out of it scarred in any way and should get the jokes and have a good time. In fact, if they haven’t seen any Star Wars movies this might be a fun way to introduce the franchise to them. May the Force be with you!

6 to 9-Years Old

Depends on the maturity level.

If they have seen and understood the previous Star Wars Movies In Order, these Padawans are going to be fine.

There are the usual fight scenes and typical Stormtrooper deaths in this one.

Violence and action, yes, it’s here- but this isn’t Episode III level in my opinion.

If your child of this age is highly sensitive, you may want to avoid the movie or screen it ahead of time.

See it once, then see it again so you can answer all those questions that kids this age often have about movies.

I’ll take my youngest (who is 6-years-old and has seen the previous movies) and she’s going to love it. She will love Chewbacca!

5 Years-Old and Under

This movie is long, yo! That’s probably my biggest concern outside of the space violence (blasters and fighting, on par with Star Wars movies).

If you have a little one who doesn’t sit for movies at home, wait for this one on video. Get a sitter and see it yourselves (hey, skip work if you have to because it’s THAT good!) but it might be too much for kiddos this age.

But a child who only watches Thomas the Tank Engine may not be ready for this mature of a show.
