Mad Men | Monday Memes
When it comes to my television entertainment choices, I do not want to think.
I don’t want to be challenged.? I don’t want to cry.? I don’t want to be “moved.”
I just want to be entertained.
I want to laugh.? I want to sing.? I want to escape for 30-60 minutes and come out the other side smiling.
My tastes predictably lead to shows like Glee, How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory and The Middle.? Smart, clever writing that entertains me but doesn’t make me cry myself to sleep at night.
My lone exception to the no-thinking rule:? Mad Men.
Ahhhhhh…. I love this show!
Because:? Don Draper and Joan Harris.
On Sunday night, Mad Men aired the first episode of the final season.
I can’t stop thinking about how much I’ll miss these people.
This show is everything I didn’t know I needed until Joan showed me.
1- It’s beautiful.? They did their homework from sets to costumes.
Let’s talk costumes: I love the look of the clothes from this era.
The classic lines and the classy hair-dos.? The heels and the hats.? Why, yes, it does make me think of classic Disneyland, which probably explains a lot.
I absolutely would have been a MESS if this was how I was expected to look on a daily basis, I won’t lie, but it is still lovely to behold.
2- It’s complex.? Season 1 was interesting.? But by Season 3 I couldn’t stop talking about Don Draper.
My husband had dropped Mad Men out of his viewing rotation, so I took?Roger, Joan, Don and Betty to the treadmill and pounded out the miles.? Things got deep; characters evolved, and relationships fell apart.
It was a hot mess and I loved it.
Side note- I watched most of season 1 giggling over the fact that my husband KNOWS JON HAMM.
Okay- knew him.
Well.? Met him.
So they were in the same frat in college until Jon left school.? They once talked at a meeting or social or something.
It counts… we’re likethis, you know.
3- It’s all so wrong.? So, so, sooooo wrong.
All of it.
Every drink in the office, every chain smoked cigarette, every racist comment, every misogynistic word, deed, or moment: it’s all wrong.
4- But it’s also… right. While I cringe and hate so much of what I watch, I can’t look away.? Because it’s truth.
The train wreck of our nation’s past played out on the small screen every Sunday night.
It takes my breath away as an educated woman in 2015 to think just how far we’ve come…Baby.
There’s only 6 more shows to go until Mad Men is wrapped up for good.? Will you be watching?? Do you have a favorite character or story line?
