Welcome to Tuesdays on the Run!? Your hosts April, Erika and I are thrilled you came by.? This week we invite you to link-up posts related to running mantras. Last week we talked safety in case you missed it!
Mantra:? defined as “a statement or slogan repeated frequently.”
We want to hear from you!? Link up at the bottom of this post and let us know about your mantra.? If you don’t have one, please link up any running related post!
I really didn’t believe in this idea until recently.? I didn’t need any special words or powers to keep going forward.? I just needed to DO IT.
I guess being a child of the 80’s engrained the old Nike phrase in me.? Just Do It was all I knew.
This all changed when I had a talk with my husband in February.? I explained how mentally draining running was for me, and how I had to feel just right to do a long run.? My head just got in the way. I told him I was the Goldilocks of running.? Things had to be JUST RIGHT for me to have a good run.? That’s when he laughed at me.
Yep.? He laughed.
Not really at me, but he said he had the perfect answer for my issues and he whipped out his phone.
It’s funny- but this nailed it for me.? It’s just that simple.
When I start doubting, start mentally wandering, start slowing, start wanting to give up…
And you know what?? It works.
It’s my own personal kick in the pants to get out of my head and just do the work in front of me.
I’ll need to draw on this as I go into my next big leap as a runner:? becoming a marathoner.
The easy part was registering and paying.? The hard part came later when the fear started sinking in.
Y’all, it’s a powerful thing in a runner.? It can stop you in your tracks, right?
While waffling a bit on my decision (I’ll admit- I had some moments where I wanted to defer the race) I came across Sarah Bareilles.? Yep, a year later than everyone else.
Confession: I’m not a huge music person.? I don’t listen to the radio and most of my running music is from the Pitch Perfect & Glee soundtracks, Justin Bieber, with a little Pink thrown in.? Oh and there may or may not be a few Kids Bop songs on there.? Thanks, kids.
I know- you just cringed.? Mr. Shenanigans just shakes his head and walks away when I start singing “Party in the USA.”
Anyway… this one’s on repeat when I run.? It’s my go-to song when I need a boost.
I want to see you Be Brave.? Show me how big your Brave is.
Think on that one for a minute.
This song was written in support of civil rights and was meant to have a powerful message.
Your fears aren’t nearly as big as YOU are.
I’m not asking myself to be perfect. I’m not asking myself to be fast.? I’m just asking myself to be Brave.
I’m bigger than my fears.? I’m braver than I’ll ever know.
These mantras helped me through this long summer of training.? They’ve helped me come to a peaceful acceptance of the marathon I’ve signed up for and I have no doubt they will be in play as I run next January.
I’ll have to STOP IT and Show my Brave for 26.2 miles.? I know I can do it.? My mantras will be a great help to get me through any walls my head or body might throw in front of me.
Do you have a phrase or song that pushes you when you need it??
