At D23 Expo 2022, Marvel Studios came prepared with news, trailers, and show-stopping performances.

Greeting fans at D23 Expo 2022, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said, “I’ve always been a little jealous – Why can’t we get our own musical number?”

Marvel Studios Disney+ Series and Specials at D23 Expo 2022

Ironheart

Executive producer Ryan Coogler offered fans an early look at the new series that takes place after the events of “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

Dominique Thorne returns as Riri Williams, a young, genius inventor determined to make her mark on the world. Her unique take on building iron suits is both brilliant and flawed, and “Ironheart” delves into the dynamics of tech versus magic.

Feige invited Anthony Ramos to the stage to greet fans and share a little about his character, Parker Robbins aka The Hood.

“He’s a complex guy. Parker is a almost a guy who was a misfit, and I want to take in other misfits and I want to show the world that you lived as outcasts but we’re going to end on top. It’s a deep, deep dive into a very dark place he goes into unfortunately, but I think on the inside Parker truly believes that he’s doing good.”

Ironheart debuts on Disney+ in late 2023.

Werewolf By Night

Directing his first project for the MCU, Michael Giacchino joined Kevin Feige on stage at D23 Expo for a look at Marvel’s first special feature.

The footage is reminiscent of the old horror movies by icons Ed Wood and Vincent Price, and stars Gael García Bernal and Laura Donnelly.

I remember as a kid sitting there watching these films…these 1930s and 40s horror movies which I loved so much. To be able to be here with you, to be the first people to show what we’ve been up to…I’m just so excited.

Werewolf by Night will start streaming on Disney+ on October 7, 2022.

Secret Invasion

Don Cheadle joined Kevin Feige to talk about two projects, the first of which being Secret Invasion. This MCU series showcases a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls who have been infiltrating Earth for years.

As part of an exclusive scene shown just for D23 Expo, Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes meets with Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson.

The two are sitting at a restaurant discussing how anyone could be corrupted by a Skrull in disguise. Rhodes then reveals he’s been part of a government program for 15 years tracking the possibility of a Skrull invasion.

With so many theories about who is a Skrull and who isn’t, this show could have huge implications for what we think we know about characters in the MCU.

Secret Invasion debuts on Disney+ in 2023.

Armor Wars

Cheadle stayed on stage to discuss his other upcoming MCU series for Disney+, Armor Wars.

Rhodey fans will see the character in a whole new light, and considering the title of the series, audiences can look forward to all-new suits for the hero, featuring different types of armor.

There’s a lot of stuff I can’t spoil…but Secret Invasion sets up a lot of what’s going to be happening in [this] series.

Armor Wars begins shooting next year and will be released as a six-episode series during Phase 6.

Some of the biggest cheers of the day came when Kevin Feige began to speak about the first Marvel series to receive a season 2, Loki.

Those in the audience received glimpse at the upcoming season that picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority.

Along with Tom Hiddleston, Sophie DiMartino, and Owen Wilson, who will reprise their roles from Season1 of Loki, Feige also announced that joining that cast for season 2 is Indiana Jones Temple of Doom, Goonies, and Everything Everywhere All at Once actor Ke Huy Quan.

“We continue our story on the TVA, and there is a whole cast of new and returning characters to explore the ever-expanding, and infinitely more dangerous, multiverse.”

Echo

Cast members from “Echo,” including Alaqua Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, Devery Jacobs, Graham Greene, Cody Lightning and Chaske Spencer, hit the stage during D23 Expo to provide the origin story for Maya Lopez, aka Echo, whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown.

Footage shown at D23 Expo highlights how Lopez’s Native American roots will shape her story. The clips and discussion heavily centered around representation for indigenous and disabled actors and characters.

“Working on this project has been such a communal experience, and has been one that I never thought I would see in my day. All of us growing up on our reservations, on our reserves, wishing to to see indigenous superheroes. To get to work with somebody as special and as important as Alaqua, and our other co-stars, has just been unbelievable. And also to all of the Deaf community, and deaf interpreters, people who were a part of making this project.”

Echo will premiere on Disney+ in 2023.

Daredevil: Born Again

Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, and Kevin Feige on stage with the Daredevil Born Again logo behind them.

After Echo confirmed that Kingpin will return for the Disney+ series D’Onofio stayed on stage, asking Feige, “Aren’t you supposed to talk about my show?”

He was immediately answered by a voice offstage saying, “Wait – YOUR show?”

Charlie Cox joined the two as the screen behind them switched over to show the logo for Daredevil: Born Again.

Feige confirmed the show will be much longer than other MCU series, at 18 episodes, and that filming will begin in 2023.

With no footage of Daredevil: Born Again to show, Cox and Feige teased that Daredevil will appear on an upcoming episode of She-Hulk.

Marvel Studios Feature Films at D23 Expo 2022

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The above Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Trailer debuted at San Diego Comic-Con in August, but Kevin Feige came prepared with an extended scene and new trailer just for Marvel fans at D23 Expo 2022.

The extended scene showed additional footage of Queen Ramonda’s meeting with the UN, and the trailer gave us another look at Tenoch Huerta’s Namor.

On what he was most excited about sharing with others, Namor said, “When you go to a new country, in a new culture, in a new industry, and be embraced…all these people, all this love, and all this compromise to make the best movie ever. It’s a great story with a lot of profound respect for the cultures, and what this means for the people. Not just entertainment; it is deeper.”

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever opens on November 11, 2022.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Marvel Studios also debuted the first full trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The footage is set to James Taylor’s song Your Smiling face and begins with what sounds like Scott Lang, Hope Van Dyne, and Cassie Lang listening to Scott’s podcast, “Big Me Little Me,” which was referenced in the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel.

After Cassie activates a device she built to trace signals from the quantum realm, the cast get pulled inside, which is where most of the trailer takes place. There, they also encounter Kang, who asks Ant-Man, “Haven’t I killed you before?” After kidnapping Cassie, he then also uses her as leverage to request Ant-Man “get something” for him. Looks like we’re in for another Ant-Man heist movie, y’all!

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania premieres February 16, 2023.

Captain America: New World Order

Director Julius Onah joined Feige on stage to chat about Captain America: New World Order, and called it a “paranoid thriller” that will continue Sam Wilson’s journey as Captain America. Joining Onah on stage were The Falcon and the Winter Soldier stars Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, and Carl Lumbly.

Feige also announced that Captain America: New World Order will also see the return of Tim Blake Nelson as The Leader, who we last saw in Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk in 2008.

Captain America: New World Order begins filming in 2023 and will be released on May 3, 2024.

Thunderbolts

In some of the most anticipated news of the day, Kevin Feige introduced which MCU characters will be joining the cast of the upcoming film Thunderbolts.

(And if you listened to our 23ish Predictions for D23 Expo episode of the No-Guilt Disney Podcast, you’ll hear we got this one mostly correct!)

Appearing as the Thunderbolts are:

  • Julia Louis Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine
  • David Harbour as Red Guardian
  • Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost
  • Wyatt Russell as John Walker aka US Agent
  • Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster
  • Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova
  • Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes

I think it tells you all you need to know about the Thunderbolts when the beloved Winter Soldier is the most stable among them.

Thunderbolts begins shooting in early 2023 and is scheduled for release on July 26, 2024.

The Marvels

At D23 Expo 2022, the cast of The Marvels appeared on stage together for the first time.

Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel), Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau/Photon) and Brie Larson (Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel) were joined on stage by The Marvels director Nia DaCosta.

They introduced an exclusive teaser just for Marvel fans at D23 Expo, which picks up from where Ms. Marvel ended.

It reveals that Kamala Khan didn’t switch places with just Captain Marvel when the series ended, but Photon was also caught in the fray. Kamala took her place floating by the SABER space station with Nick Fury, to whom she shouts, “Can I be an Avenger???” Photon transports to what appears to be a moon, facing Kree warriors. And as we saw in Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel turns up in Kamala’s bedroom.

The rest of the footage shows the Marvels meeting the Khan family and working together to understand this new element of their powers. There’s also a hilarious moment where Ms. Marvel meets Goose, Captain Marvel’s Flerkin companion.

The Marvels will be released on July 28, 2023.

Fantastic Four

During D23 Expo, Kevin Feige confirmed that WandaVision director Matt Shakman will be directing the MCU’s Fantastic Four movie.

And that was it.

“Now why is Matt not on stage? Because we have nothing else to say about it today.”

Fantastic Four will open in theaters on November 8, 2024. Presumably with a cast.
