Memorial Weekend Races
I love me a good race theme.? I love a good race theme so much, I like to celebrate early! My dad was the one that actually asked me what races were coming up and suggested we find a 10K to run together.
I stumbled across the Memorial Day March, a small local race happening the weekend BEFORE Memorial Day – and signed up! The actual weekend is always so busy I feel guilty bailing on family for a race.
I was stoked to run this 10K… the medal was cool, the shirt looked cute, and I was on board. I also noticed that this local company has a race every month, so I was pumped to try them out to see if it was a race series I needed to do more of…
The short answer – YES!
An Almost PR
I, naturally, got to the race SUPER early to pick up my packet, and then I just sat in my car for a solid hour watching Netflix.
The race was small and the people there were awesome. I saw a few runDisney shirts, so I knew I was with my people.
The race started, and I was off. It was a simple out and back with two water stops (that you’d hit twice, so four total) on a small running path in Dallas. The course was not closed, so it was fun to see other people out and about.
I started the race listening to my usual running playlist, but then quickly switched over to Girl, Wash Your Face on Audible… which is changing my life… but more on that later.
My only negative on the race was the 8 am start time. It was a long time to wait, and the temperature was only getting warmer.
I ran pretty well, stuck to my intervals, and finished in 1:11 – 2 minutes away from my 10K PR time from 2014.
A New Goal
Now, I know there are lots of reasons for this, but I still can’t believe that my running is improving?the way that it is.
Yes, I know it is because I am training.? Yes, I know it is because I have lost 50 lbs.? Yes, I know it’s because I’m putting in the work…
But I still have a hard time believing I am actually improving!
Once I finished the race on Saturday and realized I came in 4th place for my age group… I decided it’s time to set a goal!
I’m going to shoot for a new PR.? Not just a new PR, but a new POT for Wine & Dine to move me up a corral.
Goal: finish a 10K under 1:09
Stretch Goal: finish a 10K in under 1:07
… finishing under 1:07 would move up my corral placement. It would be a huge PR for me. It would be proof that I can do hard things.
A New Goal Race
Proof of time for Wine & Dine must be submitted by?July 31, 2018 … so I have some work to do! I’m currently in a 5-week training plan to help me get into the swing of things this summer, with lots of running and some great strength training.
Picking to PR a 10K is perfect because it is going to get HOT soon.? A 10K is enough miles to keep it challenging, but I won’t be in the position of having to start running at 3 am to get all the hours in before the sun comes up!
… the bad news, is that nobody has races in July in Texas.? Because JULY in TEXAS.
So maybe I’ll be able to find a race that can get me a good 10K time for Star Wars Rival Run Weekend… because I’ll need more than a 10K for Dopey, and I’m planning on starting at the back of the pack for Princess.
But you bet I have my eyes peeled for a good race opportunity!!? If you know of any… let me know!
