My First Time Running With a Group | Tuesdays on the Run

Sharing is caring!

Tuesdays On The RunThis week we want to know about your running habits: are you a joiner or a loner? ?In other words, do you like running with a group or going out alone?

Erika and April join me in hosting Tuesdays on the Run, and this week, that’s the topic.

Tell us about YOU and how you run. ?Group or Solo?

My First Time Running With a Group

A few weeks ago Jeff told me I should run with a group.

You know, Jeff Galloway. ?Yes- THAT Jeff.

Yeah… we’re likethis.?

Okay, so we aren’t exactly besties, but I am thrilled to be one of his Galloway Bloggers. ?One of his recent tips talked about why runners should consider training with a group.

Be sure to read up on all those fabulous reasons here.

ps- I have a FANTASTIC giveaway going on for you if you are interested in running his 13.1 race in Atlanta! Check it out!?

Welp, I listened to him.

And more importantly to my friend Mindy over at Race Every Step, who happens to be a Galloway group leader.

Kris and Mindy. Mindy is the one on the right. I know it's easy to confuse the two. ;)

Mindy let me know that her group was running 3 times a week this summer: one hill workout (um, no thanks!), one track workout (eeep…nope!) and one long run on Saturday.

Hmmmm….

That one got my attention. ?I can avoid hill work and track work and still meet my modest racing goals (that is- to complete a race comfortably and have a great time doing it. ?Let’s not get crazy- I’m not out to AG or anything!)

However, I cannot avoid the long run and still meet those goals.

I know plenty of people that can pull that off- I happen to live with one.

That guy right there? Couch to 19.3- no problem. Me? Oh heeaaallll no. I have to put in the training.

I have no option when it comes to completing those long runs and I suspected a little group pressure would help me get it done this summer.

So I did it.

Two weeks ago I met up with the group on Saturday for the long run. ?I have to travel into Phoenix to make this happen, which is about 45 minutes away for me.

Not a problem- as long as I don’t get lost. ?Which I did.

A quick call to Mindy as an SOS.

Mindy arranged for a partner to stick around and wait on me so I didn’t hold up the whole group. ?That was nice- as that was one of my fears!

When I got there, my new friend and I took off at a comfortable pace. ?Before I knew it we were turning around and finishing the miles we planned.

Bam. ?I’m a group runner!

Look at me! I'm a happy group runner!

I learned a few things about this first experience:

1- I would have stayed in bed, except I knew Mindy and the group was waiting on me.

2- I actually enjoyed talking to someone while we ran the miles together.

Who would have thought?

Jeff- that’s who!

Y’all, Galloway knows. ?#InJeffITrust

When my travels are over I’ll be back to the Saturday group runs. ?Who knows, I may even head in for one of those Monday hill workouts as well!

Are you a group runner or a loner? ?How do you feel about running with other people?

I could see where hill work with a group would help - it keeps your effort up with the peer pressure!

My local running store has started group runs and I hope when I am no longer injured (if that will EVER happen) that I will be able to join them for at least one this summer. I do have a fear of not being able to keep up with everyone though.

I need to find a local group to run with! Most of the ones around here are way faster than I am and I'm always concerned I'm going to slow them down (or worse, get all prideful and go to fast and hurt myself!). Glad you found a great group!!

Yep, I'm a recent convert to running with a group too. I can't believe how quickly the kilometres seem to tick by when you're chatting away or huffing and puffing alongside someone else!

I love group running. First, there is the accountability. I'm like you, Patty, if there wasn't a group of people waiting for me to join them, I would stay in bed! I also like being social when I run. If I find someone to chat with, it makes the miles seem shorter. Next thing you ow, we are finished. :) the training groups I have been part of also have Favebook groups, so we can all communicate and share stories/photos from our runs. Group runs all the way!
