Why Diet Bet Is Going To Work: Guest Post
My lovely running-blogging-momma friend, April from Run the Great Wide Somewhere has joined the Diet Bet I’m hosting. I’m so excited to hang out with her (virtually) as we both strive to lose some of the excess weight. Last time we got to hang out was at the Tinker Bell 10K– and it was awesome.

Disneyland 10K Shenanigans with April |
She wrote a GREAT post that I’m going to share with you today (with permission, of course!) explaining why she’s in. She has a past history of the Biggest Loser type money bets… that failed. In fact, she gained weight while playing those games. But she thinks knows that’s not going to be the case with Diet Bet.
If you haven’t signed up: this is for you. If you have signed up but are still confused: this is for you.
The Diet Bet: Why it?s going to work this time
Guest Post by April Shuping
I?ve participated in two different Biggest Loser style diet bets in the past year, both through Facebook groups. And in both cases, I ended up gaining weight by the end. Ugh.
Here?s how this official Diet Bet works (here?s the official link):
- You go to the Diet Bet website and sign up.
- You pay the ?buy in? which is $20.
- 1-2 days before the game begins, you submit a photo of yourself on a scale and a photo of the scale showing your starting weight. These photos are NOT published or shared anywhere!
- In this version, you have 28 days to lose 4% of your body weight.
- At the end of the game, you submit another photo of yourself and your weight on the scale (if you meet or exceed your weight loss goal)
- Everyone who meets or exceeds their weight loss goal splits the ?pot? of money evenly.
- Diet bet keeps a cut, unless so many people are successful that the ?win? is less than your buy-in. In that case, you are guaranteed to get at least what you paid in, as long as you meet the weight loss goal.

This is different from my previous tries because they were not through the official diet bet site and had the payout tiered based on the top # of losers as a percent of weight loss. So, you could meet your personal weight loss goal, and if someone else did better, you might not win at all. I had a lot of problem with motivation when I?d have a week where I had a good loss, but it still wasn?t enough because other people did better. It didn?t motivate me to lose more, it made me want to give up.

Thank you so much for your perspective and your write up April! I’m thrilled to have you (and the 70 other people who have signed up so far!) Can’t wait to see what we can accomplish together- social dieting works!
I know I’m ready to get this game started! Are you? Be sure to sign up before May 12.
But wait- doesn’t this START on May 5?
Yes, yes it does. You can still join in up to 7 days after we officially start. You WILL still have to lose 4% just like everyone else. So go ahead and get registered ASAP! I think it’s more fun dieting with friends- be sure to share this with yours too. The more people you know playing, the more support you will have, and the more money you could win!
Tell me what motivates you. Why do you want to lose weight, get fit, be healthy? Or what motivated you to stay healthy or get healthy in the past?
